For Christmas this year, I was given XM radio. I had no idea what I was missing! I haven't listened to my poor iPod in over a week. Now I have an unlimited stream of commercial-free music keeping me company. It's all I listen to at work. My favorite channels: Ethel (alternative hits), XM Cafe, and of course the 80s and 90s stations. I have experimented around with other channels as well. My coworkers have on occasion caught me listening to the dance/techno channel. The faster paced the music, the more productive I am.
Posted by Allison at January 31, 2007 01:02 PMI love XM channel 54 (I think it's Lucy). They play a lot of the music we listened to in high school...Smashing Pumpkins, Greenday, Offspring, Weezer. It all reminds me of the good ol' days!
Posted by: NotRight at February 7, 2007 12:46 PMI used to have the XM Roady and could never get it to work quite right. I do listen to XM radio on United Airlines every week. They play my favorite channel - Top 20 on 20
Posted by: China Bob at February 3, 2007 09:03 PMGotta love the XM. I bought my wife the SkiFi 3 which is the portable MP3 player version and she just loves it. I have the Roady XT in my car.
I don't think I've ever listened to the radio as much as I do now. I only switch between 3 stations...80s channel, XM Chill, and the System.
Not sure I get the communal/personal aspect thing. NPR is pretty much a national show anyway, it doesn't localize per the city you're listening to that much and I believe they too have an offering on Satellite (Bob Edwards has his own channel on XM).
Posted by: Johnny Rotten at February 1, 2007 09:19 AMi'm an npr junkie as well... and they actually had a program on today talking about radio, the history, and transformations of it. its interesting that one caller actually said the same as the previous poster (was that you?!) that am and fm radio won't go away despite sirius, xm, and internet... because it provides the communal/ personal aspect the others are missing. it is kind of cool that they can coexist and provide separate but similar functions.
Posted by: rebecca at January 31, 2007 06:51 PMAn old coworker of mine had Sirius. Not sure how that compares with XM, but I did like the mix of music he was always playing. I kind of like terrestrial radio (W***, K***), though, still, because there is a tie-in to the community the station serves. Some DJ's and sound graphics get annoying, but personally, I'm an nprhead and always will be.
Nice to have terrestrial and satelite both existing, though.
